Clear answers for the money questions around leaving a job
PTOPayout is a set of free calculators for US workers. It tells you what your unused PTO is worth, when your final paycheck is due, what severance might look like, and what the minimum wage is where you work, with the state rule and source behind each answer.
Why it exists
Leaving a job, by choice or not, comes with questions that have real money attached. Does my state require my employer to pay out vacation? When is my last check due? Is two weeks' notice a legal rule? The answers depend on the state, they're spread across agency websites, and they're often written for lawyers.
PTOPayout puts those rules next to a calculator, so you get a number and the reason for it in one place, before you talk to HR.

How the data is sourced
State rules and wage rates come from state labor department websites and the US Department of Labor. We cite the specific law where we have it (for example, California Labor Code § 227.3) and link to the page it came from. Coverage is all 50 states and DC (51 jurisdictions). Wage data was last updated in September 2026.
Where we couldn't confirm a detail with an official source, the page says so instead of presenting it as fact. The methodology page lists every source, dataset date and known limitation.
How the tools are built
-
Deterministic formulas
Each calculator applies a fixed formula to your inputs. The same inputs always give the same answer, and the result shows the math.
-
Rules from the source
State rules and rates live in dated data files. Each record stores the URL it came from, so you can check it.
-
A static site
Pages are built ahead of time and served as plain files. Calculations run in your browser.
-
No account
No sign-up, no email, no paywall. Nothing to log in to.
What PTOPayout does not do
- It doesn't give legal advice
- We explain what the rules say and estimate what they mean for your numbers. We can't tell you what to do in a dispute. A state labor department or an employment attorney can.
- It doesn't collect what you type
- Salaries, hours, dates and balances stay in your browser. We remember only the state you picked, on your own device.
- It doesn't guarantee a result
- Laws change, employers' policies differ, and some rules depend on facts we can't see. Treat every result as an estimate to confirm.

How it's paid for
Every calculator is free. The site shows ads, and some pages include affiliate or sponsored links, which are labeled. Neither affects a calculation or the rule we show.
